They also all give different rewards when used, so that's tactical as well.
So, have a read below, we'll explain when you get each patch, what they need to build and what sort of thing you might get! Please note the actual full list of rewards is larger, this is a selection of what you might get.
Faded Patches
Available from the start
Faded Pink Patch
2 Light Pink Dye (Bull Thistle) and 2 Patch Backing
Possible Rewards: Pink Mystery Animals, Pink crops such as Lillies and Orchids
Faded Yellow Patch
2 Yellow Dye (Oats) and 2 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Yellow Mystery Animals and Yellow Crops.
Faded Purple Patch
2 Violet Dye (Passion Flowers) and 2 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Purple Mystery Animals, Purple Crops, Maypole Donuts
Solid Patches
Available on completion of Mission One
Solid Blue Patch
3 Mountainberry Dye (Mountain Blueberries) and 2 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Blue Mystery Animals or blue Crops
Solid Green Patch
3 Green Dye (Cabbage) and 2 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Green Mystery Animals, green crops and crop boosts
Solid Red Patch
3 Red Dye (Red Huckleberry) and 2 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Red Mystery Animals and red crops.
Design Patches
Available after completing Mission Two
Flannel Patch
3 Flannel Pattern (Frontier Flowers and Gardener Sheep) and 3 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Quilt Patches of any type
Windmill Patch
3 Windmill Patterns (Sleeping Sheep) and 3 Patch Backing (Request)
Consumables for features such as Prize Animal feed, Explorin' Binoculars and Fishing Bait
Heart Patch
3 Heart Patterns (Non Sapling Pole Pines) and 3 Patch Backing (Request)
Possible Rewards: Premium Decorations

Lumber Tree Patch
3 Tree Patterns (Non Sapling Pine, Thorns, Rocks) and 4 Patch Backing (Request)

Fruit Tree Patch
3 Orchard Patterns (White Peach Trees and Fig Trees) and 4 Patch Backing (Request)
